IntroductionNot long ago a poster's request for Julia Ann recommendations gave me the excuse to find and review all my Julia Ann tapes. Julia Ann has been near the top of my favorites list for a couple of years and after this review I can't think of anyone I would place over her. In fact, though I almost never purchase a video because of one star, following my review of what I already had, I purchased four more Julia Ann videos so that I now have all but one of her boy/girl appearances. I love her incredible curvy body, her drop dead gorgeous blue eyed face and her wild mane of pale blonde hair. She comes closer to my view of physical perfection than any other adult video star. Despite her limited number of videos or perhaps because of them, it's clear that Julia Ann has an appeal out of proportion to her few on- screen appearances. After her introduction in Hidden Obsessions she was the star and box cover girl for every video that she appeared in (where I have seen the box cover). Everyone of her videos still seems to be available as well. In the Internet Adult Film Database, Julia Ann is listed with 26 titles but it is obvious that some are not going to have much appeal to Julia Ann fans. Three are Award show videos; how much original Julia Ann sex are you going to get in the two of the these that are not listed as non sex? Three other videos are listed as non sex and four are or should be listed as lez only; one listing appears incomplete and should perhaps also be a lez only listing. While I very much enjoy many lesbian scenes, I never buy or rent because of them; if I get a good one its a nice bonus. So this leaves a total of 15 mainstream adult videos where Julia appears with a male partner. Fourteen of those are reviewed here as are two lez only appearances. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations F.J.LincolnOf those 15 videos, 8 are directed by F.J. Lincoln so its helps to know something about F.J. He does formula porn that's more consistent than any director I know: 5 scenes including one lez scene and often with one group or multi-way scene, usually set in upscale homes. Scenes are usually 12 to 18 minutes and rarely interrupted with non sex distractions. All have minimal plots that are little more than a device to provide transition between scenes, usually with one to three minutes of dialog between scenes. Sometimes the dialog is actually sexy or funny. Many F.J. videos have one anal (often quite good) but as many have none and big facials are rare; F.J. videos with Julia Ann tend to be light on the anal. Sex is always pretty conventional but can be pretty intense, no rough stuff, women treated well and no extreme sex (e.g. no a2m). Nearly all have music soundtracks made for the videos; the music never drowns out the performers but can sometimes be loud or repetitive enough to be annoying. F.J. Lincoln videos are characterized by lighting and videography that's as good as it gets. Count on plenty of first rate full body shots and sharp focused extreme close ups. Through his career F.J. worked most often with his former wife Patti Rhodes as producer and writer and with Kathy Mac as videographer. Kathy Mac rarely wastes a shot so even a lot of the transitions shots are pointed and framed where you think they ought to be. 6 of Julia Ann's videos are with this production team. F.J. also often works with videographer Ralph Parfait who is better than average but has his share of why are you pointing the camera there or framing the scene as you are shots. The Patti Rhodes productions are more conventional with the emphasis on sex; when Matthew Taylor, another regular F.J. associate, gets his hands into it as executive producer you expect contrivances that distract from the sex in one or more scenes. Julia Ann doesn't do anal (or anything extreme) and only does facials with her SO, Aaron Colt (to the limited extent that he can manage them). All of her performances with any male other than Aaron are with a condom. 8 of her appearances described below are with Aaron. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations Taboo 13Taboo 13 is my favorite Julia Ann video which ends with an outstanding 17 minute scene with Julia Ann and Steve Drake that starts with plenty of kissing and fondling, includes a spectacular RC (reverse cowgirl) and ends with a rare tit fuck and cum shot on her tits. The performers show good involvement with each other; both were really into this one or are excellent actors and the scene includes a good variety positions with a natural flow. Its like watching two people have 17 minutes of continuous sex; cuts are simply to get a new or better view; there are no how did they get there or where did that come from transitions. Its scenes and videography like this that are the reason for buying Julia Ann videos. 90 minute Taboo 13 starts with a 2 minute erotic dialog with Julia Ann and Buck Adams which comes to an abrupt end when Julia says their relationship is over. Julia's delivery of her lines throughout Taboo 13 is uncharacteristically good; this opening dialog reminds me of Lena in its erotic appeal but Julia's voice is girlish in contrast to Lena's husky voice. Buck is then paired with clean shaven, brunette fleshpot Sydney Dance aka Dominique Bouche that includes an excellent anal in its 13 minutes. Sydney is pretty vocal here. Barbara Doll, a natural blonde with long wavy hair and full natural figure, then administers a superior blow job followed by a fine cowgirl anal on Jonathan Morgan in their 13 minute scene. Barbara's position is upright or even leaning back and there are excellent shots from both front and back; the views are as good as that normally afforded by RC. In Taboo 13 all scenes are indoors and lighting is consistently excellent. Every scene is loaded with good full body shots. I like anal and I wish there were more F.J. videos like Taboo 13. Raunch 9 gives the viewers many opportunities to see Julia Ann in all her splendor. This starts with much fondling and toe sucking that will be too much for any but the foot fetishists and she never gets off the bed (outdoors in speckled sunlight) and some of the shots are through the bars of the bedstead so the views of Julia are more limited than many other scenes. A fine scene that would have been better if Vixen had lost her leather and chain "vest" at some point. Four and a quarter of Wild Thing's scenes are shot outdoors. The lighting is generally good and the open space provides the opportunity for excellent full body shots in every scene. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations Pink Lady Detective AgencyThe 87 minute Pink Lady is hurt by a stupid plot in which Julia Ann plays an ultra klutzy detective; she can't take 5 steps without stumbling, walking into, knocking over or dropping something. She even falls down when trying to take off her trench coat; this is not sexy. Pink Lady Detective Agency closes with a good 16 minute Julia Ann and Aaron Colt scene. This starts with a three minute strip tease in which fortunately she is no longer a klutz and ends with a mild facial. Included are some first rate closeups of pussy eating and a short but nice face fuck with Julia Ann laying breasts up over the arm of a sofa, with head hanging upside down. The fucking sequence which has Julia Ann laying face down over the back of a sofa limiting the good shots hurts the scene. Pink Lady opens with Gerry Pike and a pretty brunette with small natural perky breasts (either Christina Clark or Maggie May) in an a so so 10 minute scene. The opening blow job may put you to sleep and there is a series of largely wasted shots from her pussy up past her tits to the BJ; there is too much contrasty shadow to see much. She administers another boring BJ with unvaried in and out moderate depth mouth action and no hand action, part of another mediocre scene. Overall one of Kathy Mac's weaker efforts with a significant number of poorly aimed and or poorly lit shots. Though this has 78 minutes of sex in an 87 minute video only big Julia Ann or Brittany O'Connel fans are likely to have any real interest in it. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations Stiff Competition 2The 87 minute Stiff Competition 2, which added Stuart Douglas to the production team as executive producer, will disappoint Julia Ann fans as her scene with Peter North is in a boxing ring with two other couples who get much of the video time. Actually the sex contest theme pretty much dooms the video before it gets started. Stiff Competition opens with a 15 minute scene with Kylie Ireland, a pretty blonde with large enhanced breasts, and Peter North. Draghixa, an all natural eastern European beauty, joins them halfway through and Peter blows the cum shot totally missing both waiting faces. Next is a first rate but short, 10 minute, lez scene with Julia Ann and Misty Rain, well known for her nipple rings in her natural breasts on very trim and firm figure with a great butt, at ringside including a number of superior full body shots. Sex and eroticism are the losers in the contest scenes with sex driven by the theme (vigor but no involvement) and constant announcer and crowd interruptions and three couples in a confined and obstructed venue. A clear example where everyone would have been better off if F.J. had stuck to the formula. Both are Sin City productions directed by F.J. Lincoln, Matthew Taylor as executive producer, Ralph Parfait doing the video and Patti Rhodes as producer. Rocco Siffredi is the top billed male star in both videos but Julia Ann does not perform with him despite the Conquest box cover. She has two scenes in each, one with Aaron Colt, and a lesbian scene. Conquest runs 87 minutes and Diary 75. Of these two Diary has the edge in video and lighting but the real difference is the Julia Ann scenes. Diary's fourth scene has 19 minutes of quite but convincing sex with a natural flow to the various position transitions. Its set in a bedroom and includes plenty of excellent near full body shots and tight closeups and ends with a short tit fuck and a mild facial. This is probably her best scene with Aaron. Conquest's fourth scene is a 20 minute outdoor, firelit nighttime scene which starts with three minutes of dancing and prancing. Her body is shown to great effect and while she is fully naked throughout, her entire body is striped with body paint. The shot with one foot on a low wall while Aaron eats her pussy is excellent. The scene dies during the extended 69 where Julia nibbles and toys with rather than sucks Aaron's dick; despite every intent not to I had to use the fast forward button. The lighting is excellent but it is a nighttime scene and some of it is shot through the fire. Even after listening to the dialog that ties the scenes together I don't know the why for the effects used in this scene but they detract from the sex. In Diary, Julia has a toy free 14 minute scene three with Celeste where both are seen to great effect, fully naked. There is nice breast play at the beginning but strings of pearls are overused as substitutes for sex toys through much of the scene. It includes some pussy grinding action. In the 19 minute Conquest lez scene (second) with Shelby Stevens, Julia never removes her chain "bra" or skirt which she only pushes up the last few minutes so she is clothed the entire scene defeating the purpose of getting Julia Ann videos. There were a few excellent full body shots of Shelby but most of the scene, the camera stays way too close way too long. Diary's other action paired Diva and Rocco for 10 minutes in a scene with no cum shot. This starts as an Antony and Cleopatra costume scene but both end up naked. Celeste and Woody Long are next in a very good but too short 11 minute scene. Surprisingly the short doggy lacks and really good close-ups but the mish makes up for that. The final 15 minute three way had Rocco, Melanie Moore and a pre boob and nose job, but clean shaven and fleshy as always, Nikki Sinn. Normally I really like Melanie but this is the least attractive I've seen her look as in no makeup and ratty looking hair. Nikki got an extended anal and facial with a couple drops landing on Melanie's face. Conquest opened with a 13 minute scene with Chelsea Lynx and Rocco. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations Toni English (Vivid Videos)Reviewed here are three Julia Ann, Wave videos directed by Toni English: Julia Ann Superstar, Heist and Return Engagement. Producers and videographers (understandably) are not credited. Superstar and Return have the soft focus look that characterizes nearly all Vivid videos. In Superstar, after the first few pussy shots, I thought Julia Ann was appearing clean shaven but then I saw some light catching her pubic hair and realized the focus (or video reproduction) was so soft that you simply couldn't see her hair in many shots. I eventually concluded that she had about the same amount as most of her other videos. It is this maddening lack of visual detail that really hurts what might otherwise have been a fairly decent video. My copy of Heist showed good contrast and color saturation, unlike Superstar and Return Engagement which were afflicted by Vivid's normal lack of contrast and washed out color. And though I would not call Heist sharp focus, it is much sharper than the other two Vivid videos. Julia's hair appears about six inches shorter in the Vivid videos than her earlier ones (mid to lower back). Its still long (several inches below her shoulders) but much more ordinary. She appears with the bow tie tatoo in the small of her back in the Vivid videos which were her last three. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations Julia Ann SuperstarThis 72 minute video has a plot like most Vivid videos and just like most plotted videos way too much time is spent on silly dialog. Julia Ann wins a contest and is taken to Hollywood by bad guy producer Marc Wallice. After making it with Marc's mistreated girl friend Jill Kelly and star / stud Mark Davis, the evils of Hollywood drive her back to small town boyfriend Steven St. Croix. What is good about this video is that Julia Ann appears in 39 minutes of on- screen sex. In fact she completely dominates this video getting most of the non sex time as well. Julia's first scene (second in the video) is a ho-hum, 5 minute poolside lez scene with a still natural Jill Kelly. Too much of this scene is taken up by 69 lacking any good shots. Her two b/g scenes are long and without interruption and Julia gets fully naked fairly early in both scenes. The best scene in the video is the next to the last which pairs Julia Ann with Marc Davis for a 17 minute performance where both are clearly engaged with each other. It starts with open mouth kissing with plenty of tongue and lip action and moves on to heavy petting. Unfortunately, the scene is set on four poster bed with translucent curtains that regularly hang or blow in the way of the action. Add this to the standard Vivid video faults and what should have been an outstanding scene is reduced to the nearly routine. When Marc eats Julia there are what should have been great pussy shots; what's the point when the focus is so soft you can hardly tell inner from outer labia. Julia gives Marc a fine BJ; while she never goes real deep, there is a good mixture of tongue action with varied mouth action and sustained, coordinated hand and mouth action. The missionary fuck has some well aimed and framed shots from above but just as many, totally wasted shots of Marc's balls from behind where if it weren't for the tattooed ankles that come into view, could have been any starlet; why use a stunner like Julia if you waste it on shots like this? The best part is the concluding RC where you do get some good near full figure shots when the curtains aren't in the way. Compared to the RCs in Taboo 13 or Elements of Desire, though, this is lacking. The scene ends with Marc cumming on Julia's breast and then kissing her. The effect of the scene is somewhat spoiled by the ensuing plot including Jill Kelly's alcohol/drowning death and then Marc telling his agent not to give Julia his home phone (plots - yuch!). The final scene is a 17 minute pairing with Steven St. Croix. There are some interesting contrasts with the preceding scene. On first viewing, I thought there was some pretty serious kissing but on re-watching, multiple times, it becomes clear that Julia won't let Steven's tongue into her mouth. A couple times she pulls away and a couple times she greets his advances with a closed mouth; the scene is cut to de-emphasize this. Her BJ is also somewhat perfunctory. There are some fine shots with Steven eating Julia's pussy with her stretched out on her back on the hood of a car. The missionary shots are an almost total waste; more balls, hairy in this case with no view of Julia but even he side shots here are mostly a waste. Superstar's other sex action starts with an under 3 minute pairing of Channone, a short haired tattooed French brunette with medium sized and very firm enhanced breasts, and Marc Wallice in a limo. This includes a momentary anal but the quarters are so close that we never get any decent looks at Channone and the scene so short it seems the only purpose is to put another name in the cast list. In Pussyman 3 you at least get some good views of Julia; 4 is guaranteed to disappoint. In Return Engagement, almost the only thing worth watching is the poolside lez scene, her b/g scene with Steven St. Croix being a total disappointment. Return to top, Intro, Recommendations Review PhilosophyIf you've gotten this far, you've noticed how much space I've devoted to lighting and shot selection compared to how little I've spent on how "hot" a given scene is or even cataloging the positions used. To put it bluntly, we're talking about fuck films. Nearly every scene includes a blow job, cunnilingus, and at least one vaginal and sometimes anal fuck sequence. Unless a scene includes something unexpected or lacks something expected or something is particularly well or poorly done, why comment on it? There's something special about a performer like Tammi Ann impaling herself with wild abandon on some guys hard dick but obviously passionate and athletic fucks are rare. At the other extreme are performances where the female is obviously bored and just there for the money or the loud and monotonous moans that start at the beginning of the scene and continue until the end. Nearly all adult video performances are just that performances. Convincing performances can vary from quietly passive to wild abandon and different viewers are likely to have dramatically different perceptions as to which is "hot" and which is not. That said, I expect to see the performance. Back of the head blow jobs and muff diving shots have less than zero value to me; I'd rather be watching a real movie than such garbage. The same goes for out of focus or soft focus or grainy or badly lit or wildly aimed shots of any type. The starting point for acceptable porn is well lit, well focused shots of explicit sexual activity. In my view this definitely does include strip sequences and kissing and fondling. If they're going to show kissing though, I want to see lip and tongue action, not backs of heads. Filling every frame with sexual action is just the starting point. What separates the excellent from the routine is that in the excellent, every frame is a picture in its own right. Every frame shows us the female face and figure whether it is the full figure of an RC or strip tease, or a pan that follows the big curves of the breasts and buttocks or a closeup that shows the small curves of a neatly shaved pussy. Shot properly, intimate pussy structures being pushed in and pulled out by a thrusting cock, can be just as alluring as a beautiful face giving a blow job or a beautiful body doing a doggie or RC. Finally the ideal scene has real scene development, a beginning, middle and climax; any scene that starts with fucking or ends without a clear climax is simply not complete. A climax doesn't necessarily have to be a visible cum shot but what sexual climax is more visually striking than a big facial? So, I try to focus on the things, either good or bad that set the scene apart from the routine and to keep the highly subjective elements ("heat") to a minimum. I try to describe the key elements of a scene that regardless of personal preferences, two viewers with widely different tastes are likely to agree on. Of course, since its my review, I do include editorial comments where it seems appropriate. Most important perhaps, is that I try to tell how long each scene lasts. After all this is what we are paying for; if a scene is good, a 20 minute scene is worth four comparable five minute scenes and if its bad (or simply not to your tastes), that's four times as long on the FF button.
