Perhaps one reason why production values are not a high priority in
adult video is the fact that until recently the only medium they were
available on was VHS. Now that DVD is here, the near-perfect medium
highlights the cheap production. (Why would anyone want to watch Ed
Powers in all his glory, with high resolution picture and Dolby
Digital sound?) 

Still, there are porn flicks that look and sound good on DVD. Take
Michael Ninn's New Wave Hookers 5, for instance. Now here is a flick I
could recommend to a friend who is not into porn and not feel
embarrassed. Not that it is perfect, by any means, but what it lacks
in polish it more than makes up for in the sex department.
Fortunately, Ninn doesn't try to tell a coherent story, but relies on
a flood of surreal sex scenes accompanied by dreamy music with a heavy
bass element, interspersed with bits of whacked out comedy.  The plot
has to do with Julius (Jamie Gillis) who is some kind of a big shot
businessman and the mad scientist working for him (Scotty Schwartz).
Scotty, you see, has invented this gadget, with which you can project
your dreams onto a 3D virtual screen. Only there's this fuckup with
the demonstration and Silky Smooth, the pimp from hell (Ron Jeremy in
blackface, doing a bravura performance) appears from nowhere with two
of his girls (Sunset Thomas and Stacy Valentine), causing all sorts of
interesting mischief. In the meantime, Que X, the ultimate New Wave
Hooker (Vicca), is unveiled and put to the test. Only perhaps none of
this is really happening except inside Julius's delirious brain, and
he is actually flopped out in some dubious hotel. Confused? You won't
be after watching this. 

The sex begins with Jamie Gillis and Juli Ashton riding up in a cargo
elevator. The elevator operators (Felecia and Asia Carrera) pounce on
Juli, which leads to a lesbian threeway.  After that comes the weakest
bit of the movie: a number of girls in aviator helmets lowering
themselves on dildoes sticking from the floor. Ninn could have taken
that out without without hurting the movie and given Nikita (who
appears later) more to do instead. 

Fortunately things pick up in a hurry with the demonstration of the
virtual reality gadget. The very naughty nurses Jeanna Fine and Anna
Malle gorge themselves on the awe-inspiring member of a masked Sean
Michaels, and get assfucked by him in turn, and finally share a facial
from him.  Putting Anna and Jeanna in the same scene is a great idea,
as both these women have a way with the dirty talk that works for me,
at least.  After this scene they get to play doctor on pretty Sunset
Thomas using shiny dildoes and anal beads, and at one point spreading
her pussy with pliers.  (No speculum, though. It could maybe have
actually worked in this setting.... maybe not.) 

Next comes a comic interlude with the Silky Smooth character, whose
antics are copied from the film The Mask (needless to say, the makers
of the Jim Carrey vehicle had more dough to spend on computer
generated special effects).  After goofing around with Jamie Gillis
and Sharon Kane, Ron-Silky whizzes into an alley where Nikita and Lea
Martini are standing against a wall. He propositions them in jive talk
and the girls answer stonefaced in Russian. (What is "Jamoke", by the
way?) He does a brief Elvis imitation and then turns into a giant
chicken, but Nikita only barks out "Nyet". Then a clown arrives
pulling Scotty in a cart, and the girls follow this odd duo away. (Now
we also see that the girls are wearing long coats matching the
coloring of the clown's suit - bright red and yellow with black polka
dots.)  Nikita and Lea go at each other while the clown sits in the
background and watches, and then Lea swallows the clown's dick and is
fucked in the pussy and ass.  Somehow Nikita gets underused in
the latter part of this scene, as she just sort of hovers in the
background. A bit of a waste, if you ask me. 

After this Vicca gets buttbanged by three "Japanese businessmen"
wearing coke bottle glasses and fake teeth.  Jamie Gillis does his
closest thing to a sex scene when he dildoes Sharon Kane and makes her
deep throat a dildo, showing his nasty side with the dirty talk. I
have always thought of Gillis as a repulsive sleazoid, but he is
actually pretty cool in this flick.  And after this Stacy Valentine
does a DP and facial scene with Nick East and Mark Davis.  

A business meeting with Juli Ashton, Eric Monte and Dave Cummings
turns into a threeway with anal and another facial, after which the
camera lingers on a closeup of Juli's sticky-wet face. 

The finale is supposed to be a facial to end all facials, as Que X is
put to the test with three megasplashers. (That is, with digital
effects Vicca seems to give head and be splashed by three Peter
Norths.) The effect does not entirely succeed, but the idea is good. 

Besides the film the DVD features trailers for Caf� Flesh 2, LA
Fashion Girls and Diva 4. The Caf� Flesh trailer in particular is very
good, except for one detail: they have put in a supposedly funny sound
effect with clips of anal footage. Didn't work for me. There's also
the usual stuff: an animated scene selection screen, background music
for all the menus, and brief star introductions. Vivid DVD's have a
better interface, but their movies aren't as good, as a rule. 

The picture and sound are very good, the sound in particular is better
than any other adult DVD I've seen and heard. (Mainstream titles, of
course, are quite another thing.) All in all, this has pretty much
taken the place of my current #1 favorite adult DVD, replacing Greg
Dark's Psycho Sexuals.
