Hi...

I know this was posted here before, but oh well. I can't find Ted's
original thread on Deja News. Grr.

The Adult Video News annual award show was held during the Consumer
Electronics Show (CES) January 8-12, 1998 in Las Vegas. BIG Video and
director Wash West swept the awards with their stunning "Naked
Highway." The studio garnered 6 awards, 5 of them for "Naked Highway"
(the other was for "Dr. Jerkoff & Mr. Hard," another Jim Buck/Wash West
feature). Performer Jim Buck also swept the awards, as veteran
performer Bo Summers was the only other performer to be honored.

Men of Odyssey won 3 awards for their "Family Values," and legendary
director and writer Jerry Douglas was edged out in tight balloting by
Wash West for Best Screenplay. Titan Media continued its climb into the
ranks of the elite studios, as its "Fallen Angel" took home the Best
Specialty video and "Titan Men: Alone in the Backwoods" captured Best
Solo video honors. Catalina also garnered two awards, both for its
bisexual comedy "Night of the Living Bi Dolls." HIS Video, Studio 2000,
and All Worlds won one award each.

Many observers (including me) were shocked that Falcon Studios, Bel Ami,
and director Chi Chi LaRue won no awards at all. Many had expected
strong competition between Men of Odyssey's Jerry Douglas-helmed "Family
Values" (featuring the return of Kurt Young) and BIG Video's
GVG-sweeping "Naked Highway." But in some categories, insiders say,
balloting between BIG's "Naked Highway" and Odyssey's "Family Values"
was not close at all. Industry insiders were also surprised that All
Worlds Video, which produces far more videos each year than any other
gay porn studio, only won in a single (minor) category.

The length of the show was again a concern (the number of heterosexual
categories is quiet large), and the number of gay industry insiders
attending the awards dipped slightly this year. Only a few gay studios
had booths at CES. Indeed, none of the large video trade shows draws a
significant gay presence. At CES, most studios and distributors satisfy
themselves with hosting private dinners and receptions for gay
attendees.

The big buzz at the awards was the rumor that AVN is considering moving
the gay awards to West Hollywood next year, separating it from the
straight awards show. This would enable AVN to enlarge the show's
categories and gay entertainment portions, permit the magazine to court
gay clientele and advertisers, and increase attendance by studio
personnel and performing talent. While the idea has garnered some
support among gay staff at AVN, others find the timing of the maneuver
suspect. With the GVG awards threatened with closure by a lawsuit, why
is AVN making this decision now? But at least one AVN staff member said
that the concept had been kicked around the office for some time and
that the timing was only coincidence.

See ya...

Tim
